American Library Association Resolution for Purchasing of Accessible Electronic Resources
Thanks to our advocacy and the tireless effort of Adina Mulliken of Syracuse University Library, the American Library Association adopted the attached resolution this week. The resolution recommends that libraries require their vendors of electronic resources to guarantee that the technology complies with accessibility requirements, that libraries require or conduct user-testing of accessibility, and that funding authorities provide sufficient funding to ensure accessible technology purchases.
This is responsive to the recent adoption of inaccessible Adobe Digital Editions online electronic books by numerous libraries across the country. If nothing else, the process of getting the resolution adopted really educated the libraries about their obligations and their authority to require accessibility from their vendors.
